MITROPOULOS THEODORE JAMES The man everyone knew as "Chef Theodore," was called to be with the Lord on March 23, 2012. He was baptized Theodore Mitropoulos in Demetra, Greece, where his magnificent voice was first discovered and began to develop. He sang at many churches and went on to sing in the National Greek Cathedral. During a visit to Athens, Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew called Ted the best cantor he ever heard. At age 16 young Theodore was a respected journalist for the Patris newspaper. Following university studies in theology, philosophy, and law, Ted moved to Athens and became a high-placed adviser to the Georgios Papandreou government. St. Nickolas parish in Detroit convinced Ted to come to the United States as resident canter in their church. It was then that he began his career as a chef and quickly developed a reputation for his fine menus of excellent Greek casseroles, and desserts at restaurants in Detroit, New Orleans, and Phoenix. He opened "Chef Theodore" restaurants first in Farmington Hills and later in Philadelphia. Both were at the top of many fine dining lists. He will be greatly missed by his children Angela, Dimitra, and Alexandros; grandson Nikolaos; brothers Nikolaos, Kostantinos, and Stavros; sisters Vaso, Aglaia, Ekaterina, and Christina; and his many nieces and nephews. Following the Trisagio blessing of the Orthodox Church, and keeping with his lifelong spirit of generosity, Ted became part of the University of Michigan Medical School Anatomical Donor program so that, in his words, "the learning will continue". Friends are invited to join family for a memorial service at: St. George Greek Orthodox Church Dix-Toledo Road Sunday May 6, 2012.
